RESUMO

This study presents a database of central blood pressure waveforms according to cardiovascular health conditions, to supplement the lack of clinical data in cardiovascular health research, constructed by a cardiovascular simulator. Blood pressure (BP) is the most frequently measured biomarker, and in addition to systolic and diastolic pressure, its waveform represents the various conditions of cardiovascular health. A BP waveform is formed by overlapping the forward and reflected waves, which are affected by the pulse wave velocity (PWV). The increase in vascular stiffness with aging increases PWV, and the PWV-age distribution curve is called vascular age. For cardiovascular health research, extensive data of central BP waveform is essential, but the clinical data published so far are insufficient and imbalanced in quantity and quality. This study reproduces the central BP waveform using a cardiovascular hardware simulator and artificial aortas, which mimic the physiological structure and properties of the human. The simulator can adjust cardiovascular health conditions to the same level as humans, such as heart rate of 40-100 BPM, stroke volume of 40-100 mL, and peripheral resistance of 12 steps. Also, 6 artificial aortas with vascular ages in the 20-70 were fabricated to reproduce the increase in vascular stiffness due to aging. Vascular age calculated from measured stiffness of artificial aorta and central BP waveform showed an error of less than 3 years from the clinical value. Through this, a total of 636 waveforms were created to construct a central BP waveform database according to controlled various cardiovascular health conditions.

This study presents a cardiovascular simulator that mimics the human cardiovascular system's physiological structure and properties to reproduce the human blood pressure waveform. Systolic, diastolic blood pressures, and its waveform are key indicators of cardiovascular health. The blood pressure waveform is closely related to the pulse wave velocity and the overlap of the forward and reflected pressure waves. The presented cardiovascular simulator includes an artificial aorta made of biomimetic silicone. The artificial aorta has the same shape and stiffness as the human standard and is encased with a compliance chamber. The compliance chamber prevents distortion of the blood pressure waveform from strain-softening by applying extravascular pressure. The blood pressure waveform reproduced by the simulator has a pressure range of 80-120 mmHg, a pulse wave velocity of 6.58 m/s, and an augmentation index of 13.3%. These values are in the middle of the human standard range, and the reproduced blood pressure waveform is similar to that of humans. The errors from the human standard values are less than 1 mmHg for blood pressure, 0.05 m/s for pulse wave velocity, and 3% for augmentation index. The changes in blood pressure waveform according to cardiovascular parameters, including heart rate, stroke volume, and peripheral resistance, were evaluated. The same pressure ranges and trends as in humans were observed for systolic and diastolic blood pressures according to cardiovascular parameters.

Bioinspired soft devices, which possess high adaptability to targeted objects, provide promising solutions for a variety of industrial and medical applications. However, achieving stable and switchable attachment to objects with curved, rough, and irregular surfaces remains difficult, particularly in dry and underwater environments. Here, a highly adaptive soft microstructured switchable adhesion device is presented, which is inspired by the geometric and material characteristics of the tiny denticles on the surface of an octopus sucker. The contact interface of the artificial octopus sucker (AOS) is imprinted with soft, microscale denticles that interact adaptably with highly rough or curved surfaces. Robust and controllable attachment of the AOS with soft microdenticles (AOS-sm) to dry and wet surfaces with diverse morphologies is achieved, allowing conformal attachment on curved and soft objects with high roughness. In addition, AOS-sms assembled with an octopus-arm-inspired soft actuator demonstrate reliable grasping and the transport of complex polyhedrons, rough objects, and soft, delicate, slippery biological samples.

The primary goal of this study is to develop a mathematical model that can establish a transfer function relationship between the "external" pulse pressures measured by a tonometer and the "internal" pulse pressure in the artery. The purpose of the model is to accurately estimate and rebuild the internal pulse pressure waveforms using arterial tonometry measurements. To develop and validate a model without human subjects and operators for consistency, this study employs a radial pulse generation system, a robotic tonometry system, and a write model with an artificial skin and vessel. A transfer function model is developed using the results of the pulse testing and the mechanical characterization testing of the skin and vessel. To evaluate the model, the pulse waveforms are first reconstructed for various reference pulses using the model with tonometry data. They are then compared with pulse waveforms acquired by internal measurement (by the built-in pressure sensor in the vessel) the external measurement (the on-skin measurement by the robotic tonometry system). The results show that the model-produced pulse waveforms coinciding well with the internal pulse waveforms with small relative errors, indicating the effectiveness of the model in reproducing the actual pulse pressures inside the vessel.

The development of bioinspired switchable adhesive systems has promising solutions in various industrial/medical applications. Switchable and perceptive adhesion regardless of the shape or surface shape of the object is still challenging in dry and aquatic surroundings. We developed an electronic sensory soft adhesive device that recapitulates the attaching, mechanosensory, and decision-making capabilities of a soft adhesion actuator. The soft adhesion actuator of an artificial octopus sucker may precisely control its robust attachment against surfaces with various topologies in wet environments as well as a rapid detachment upon deflation. Carbon nanotube-based strain sensors are three-dimensionally coated onto the irregular surface of the artificial octopus sucker to mimic nerve-like functions of an octopus and identify objects via patterns of strain distribution. An integration with machine learning complements decision-making capabilities to predict the weight and center of gravity for samples with diverse shapes, sizes, and mechanical properties, and this function may be useful in turbid water or fragile environments, where it is difficult to utilize vision.

For highly conformable and universal transport devices, bioinspired dry adhesion systems with reversible molecular attractions (e.g., van der Waals forces, capillarity, or suction stress) between the engaged surfaces have recently become favorable for various dry/wet processes in flexible devices and medical applications. In addition, many efforts have been made for switchable attachments of such adhesives by employing costly sophisticated systems such as mechanically deformable chucks, UV-radiating components, or fluidic channels. In this work, we propose a simple electrothermally actuating transport device based on an octopus-inspired microsphere-embedded sucker (OMS). The adhesive with microsphere-embedded suckers offers enhanced adhesion on dry/wet surfaces, in accordance with investigation of the geometric and materials parameters of the novel suction architecture for maximizing adhesion interactions. Inspired by muscle actuation of octopus tentacles, we laminate the electrothermally reactive poly(3,4-ethylenedioxy thiophene):poly(styrenesulfonic acid) (PEDOT:PSS) layer on the backside of the OMS adhesive patch. By controlling inputs of electrical energy, our assembled actuator may actively expand and contract reversibly to induce switchable attachments and detachments. Our bioinspired device can be integrated onto a robotic arm to attach and release against dry/wet flexible thin objects.

In this article, present RealWalk, a pair of haptic shoes for HMD-based VR, designed to create realistic sensations of ground surface deformation, and texture using Magnetorheological fluid (MR fluid). RealWalk offers a novel interaction scheme through the physical interaction between the shoes, and the ground surfaces while walking in VR. Each shoe consists of two MR fluid actuators, an insole pressure sensor, and a foot position tracker. The MR fluid actuators are designed in the form of multi-stacked disc structure with a long flow path to maximize the flow resistance. With changing the magnetic field intensity in MR fluid actuators based on the ground material in the virtual scene, the viscosity of MR fluid is changed accordingly. When a user steps on the ground with the shoes, the two MR fluid actuators are pressed down, creating a variety of ground material deformation such as snow, mud, and dry sand. We built an interactive VR application, and compared RealWalk with vibrotactile-based haptic shoes in four different VR scenes: grass, sand, mud, and snow. We report that, compared to vibrotactile-haptic shoes, RealWalk provides higher ratings in all scenes for discrimination, realism, and satisfaction. We also report qualitative user feedback for their experiences.

Background: In recent years, vibrotactile haptic feedback technology has been widely used for user interfaces in the mobile devices. Although functional neuroimaging studies have investigated human brain responses to different types of tactile inputs, the neural mechanisms underlying high-frequency vibrotactile perception are still relatively unknown. Our aim was to investigate neuromagnetic brain responses to high-frequency vibrotactile stimulation, using magnetoencephalography (MEG). Methods: We measured 152-channel whole-head MEG in 30 healthy, right-handed volunteers (aged 20-28 years, 15 females). A total of 300 vibrotactile stimuli were presented at the tip of either the left index finger or the right index finger in two separate sessions. Sinusoidal vibrations at 150 Hz for 200 ms were generated with random inter-stimulus intervals between 1.6 and 2.4 s. Both time-locked analysis and time-frequency analysis were performed to identify peak responses and oscillatory modulations elicited by high-frequency vibrations. The significance of the evoked and induced responses for dominant and non-dominant hand stimulation conditions was statistically tested, respectively. The difference in responses between stimulation conditions was also statistically evaluated. Results: Prominent peak responses were observed at 56 ms (M50) and at 100 ms (M100) for both stimulation conditions. The M50 response revealed clear dipolar field patterns in the contralateral side with significant cortical activations in the contralateral primary sensorimotor area, whereas the M100 response was not as prominent as the M50. Vibrotactile stimulation induced significant suppression of both alpha (8-12 Hz) and beta (20-30 Hz) band activity during the mid-latency period (0.2-0.4 s), primarily in sensorimotor areas contralateral to the stimulation side. In addition, a significant alpha enhancement effect in posterior regions was accompanied with alpha suppressions in sensorimotor regions. The alpha suppression was observed in a broader distribution of cortical areas for the non-dominant hand stimulation. Conclusion: Our data demonstrate that high-frequency tactile vibrations, which is known to primarily activate Pacinian corpuscles, elicit somatosensory M50 and M100 responses in the evoked fields and induce modulations of alpha and beta band oscillations during mid-latency periods. Our study is also consistent with that the primary sensorimotor area is significantly involved in the processing of high-frequency vibrotactile information with contralateral dominance.

To meet the need for "standard" testing system for wearable blood pressure sensors, this study intends to develop a new radial pulsation simulator that can generate age-dependent reference radial artery pressure waveforms reflecting the physiological characteristics of human cardiovascular system. To closely duplicate a human cardiovascular system, the proposed simulator consists of a left ventricle simulation module, an aorta simulation module, a peripheral resistance simulation module, and a positive/negative pressure control reservoir module. Simulating physiologies of blood pressure, the compliance chamber in the simulator can control arterial stiffness to produce age-dependent pressure waveforms. The augmentation index was used to assess the pressure waveforms generated by the simulator. The test results show that the simulator can generate and control radial pressure waveforms similar to human pulse signals consisting of early systolic pressure, late systolic pressure, and dicrotic notch. Furthermore, the simulator's left ventricular pressure-volume loop results demonstrate that the simulator exhibits mechanical characteristics of the human cardiovascular system. The proposed device can be effectively used as a "standard" radial artery pressure simulator to calibrate the wearable sensor's measurement characteristics and to develop more advanced sensors. The simulator is intended to serve as a platform for the development, performance verification, and calibration of wearable blood pressure sensors. It will contribute to the advancement of the wearable blood pressure sensor technology, which enables real-time monitoring of users' radial artery pressure waveforms and eventually predicting cardiovascular diseases.

BACKGROUND: There exists a growing need for a cost-effective, reliable, and portable pulsation simulator that can generate a wide variety of pulses depending on age and cardiovascular disease. For constructing compact pulsation simulator, this study proposes to use a pneumatic actuator based on cam-follower mechanism controlled by a DC motor. The simulator is intended to generate pulse waveforms for a range of pulse pressures and heart beats that are realistic to human blood pulsations. METHODS: This study first performed in vivo testing of a healthy young man to collect his pulse waveforms using a robotic tonometry system (RTS). Based on the collected data a representative human radial pulse waveform is obtained by conducting a mathematical analysis. This standard pulse waveform is then used to design the cam profile. Upon fabrication of the cam, the pulsatile simulator, consisting of the pulse pressure generating component, pressure and heart rate adjusting units, and the real-time pulse display, is constructed. Using the RTS, a series of testing was performed on the prototype to collect its pulse waveforms by varying the pressure levels and heart rates. Followed by the testing, the pulse waveforms generated by the prototype are compared with the representative, in vivo, pulse waveform. RESULTS: The radial Augmentation Index analysis results show that the percent error between the simulator data and human pulse profiles is sufficiently small, indicating that the first two peak pressures agree well. Moreover, the phase analysis results show that the phase delay errors between the pulse waveforms of the prototype and the representative waveform are adequately small, confirming that the prototype simulator is capable of simulating realistic human pulse waveforms. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that a very accurate radial pressure waveform can be reproduced using the cam-based simulator. It can be concluded that the same testing and design methods can be used to generate pulse waveforms for other age groups or any target pulse waveforms. Such a simulator can make a contribution to the research efforts, such as development of wearable pressure sensors, standardization of pulse diagnosis in oriental medicine, and training medical professionals for pulse diagnosis techniques.

Haptic display units have been widely used for conveying button sensations to users, primarily employing vibrotactile actuators. However, the human feeling for pressing buttons mainly relies on kinaesthetic sensations (rather than vibrotactile sensations), and little studies exist on small-scale kinaesthetic haptic units. Thus, the primary goals of this paper are to design a miniature kinaesthetic actuator based on Magneto-Rheological (MR) fluid that can convey various button-clicking sensations and to experimentally evaluate its haptic performance. The design focuses of the proposed actuator were to produce sufficiently large actuation forces (resistive forces) for human users in a given size constraint and to offer a wide range of actuation forces for conveying vivid haptic sensations to users. To this end, this study first performed a series of parametric studies using mathematical force models for multiple operating modes of MR fluid in conjunction with finite element electromagnetism analysis. After selecting design parameters based on parametric studies, a prototype actuator was constructed, and its performance was evaluated using a dynamic mechanical analyzer. It measured the actuator's resistive force with a varying stroke (pressed depth) up to 1 mm and a varying input current from 0 A to 200 mA. The results show that the proposed actuator creates a wide range of resistive forces from around 2 N (off-state) to over 9.5 N at 200 mA. In order to assess the prototype's performance in the terms of the haptic application prospective, a maximum force rate was calculated to determine just noticeable difference in force changes for the 1 mm stoke of the actuator. The results show that the force rate is sufficient to mimic various levels of button sensations, indicating that the proposed kinaesthetic actuator can offer a wide range of resistive force changes that can be conveyed to human operators.

A dynamic high pressure standard is becoming more essential in the fields of mobile engines, space science, and especially the area of defense such as long-range missile development. However, a complication arises when a dynamic high pressure sensor is compared with a reference dynamic pressure gauge calibrated in static mode. Also, it is difficult to determine a reference dynamic pressure signal from the calibrator because a dynamic high pressure calibrator generates unnecessary oscillations in a positive-going pressure step method. A dynamic high pressure calibrator, using a quick-opening ball valve, generates a fast step pressure change within 1 ms; however, the calibrator also generates a big impulse force that can lead to a short life-time of the system and to oscillating characteristics in response to the dynamic sensor to be calibrated. In this paper, unnecessary additional resonant frequencies besides those of the step function are characterized using frequency analysis. Accordingly, the main sources of resonance are described. In order to remove unnecessary frequencies, the post processing results, obtained by a filter, are given; also, a method for the modification of the dynamic calibration system is proposed.
